Our Approach to Product Research and Development
At Nature Fresh, we take a unique and caring approach to health. We focus on understanding the root causes of health challenges, learning how the body works, and then developing safe, practical, and effective solutions through careful research and testing.
Many of the people who come to us have already tried conventional treatments such as cortisone, antibiotics, and hormone replacements with limited success. In some cases, we are delighted to work alongside doctors who ask us to help find gentle alternatives for their patients. We are truly encouraged when we see positive results from our herbal alternatives and nutritional supplements. Over the years, this has allowed us to develop and refine a range of products that doctors now successfully use in their practices.
Sue has had the privilege of contributing articles to health publications, including the international Townsend Letter and the SA Medical Academic CPD portal for integrative health practitioners. In 1996, she wrote her first paper on fluoride, followed by one on calcium. These were presented at major medical conferences and reviewed by the Dental Board and the Osteoporosis Foundation. Her radio and television interviews that year created such a positive response that we developed our fluoride-free toothpaste and calcium complex.
We believe that finding the real truth behind a health issue is the most important step toward creating meaningful solutions. All our products now carry the appropriate SAPHRA disclaimers, and our herbal ingredients are supported by EEC monographs. Above all, we are committed to promoting health and happiness while offering personal support to those who reach out to us.
As Hippocrates wisely said: “Let your food be your medicine and let your medicine be your food.”
Fluoride-Free Toothpaste
In 1996, we were approached by members of the Safe Water Foundation to look into the concerns around fluoride in toothpaste. At the time, many people were looking for fluoride-free options in supermarkets but couldn’t find any. After careful development, we created our own gentle, effective fluoride-free toothpaste.
We were pleased when Pick ’n Pay in the Western Cape agreed to stock our range. Since then, countless people with gum disease and periodontal issues have found welcome relief. The response to our radio interviews has been heart-warming, and we’ve received many beautiful messages from satisfied customers.
We love hearing how our toothpaste has helped people avoid expensive dental procedures and reduce the need for frequent professional cleanings. Mothers especially appreciate our Junior formulation because it is safe if swallowed. We are delighted that many dentists have also noticed wonderful improvements in their patients’ oral health.
Affordable Mineral Supplements for Everyday Health
Many South Africans experience mineral deficiencies that can affect people of all ages. Because our modern diets often don’t provide everything we need, we created a range of pleasant, low-cost mineral supplements — particularly calcium and magnesium — to help support long-term health and help prevent issues like osteoporosis.
For the past 25 years, we have kept these supplements affordable so that good nutrition is within reach for more families. We are happy that several of our formulations are now prescribed by doctors and can be reclaimed from medical aid. One of our long-term users has even recorded more than a 15% improvement in bone density over three years.
We continue to listen to feedback and refine our products to support overall wellbeing, including hormonal balance.
Gentle Skin Care for Sensitive Skin and Common Concerns
We developed our skin care range in response to many people struggling with irritation from commercial products. Our goal was to create gentle, natural alternatives that soothe and support sensitive skin, particularly for teenagers and those with allergies or yeast-related concerns.
We often recommend simple, natural solutions such as Rooibos tea, salt, and cider vinegar for vaginal irritations and infections. These help relieve itching, burning, and discomfort. Our bubble bath is carefully formulated to match the natural acidic pH of the skin (around 3.5–4), making it suitable and safe for little girls too.
Many people have shared how our Aloe Skin Therapy Gel has helped calm rashes, sunburn, insect bites, and acne. We are proud to use beautiful local Fynbos herbs such as wild camphor, sage, buchu, and aloe in our products.
Our Passion for Preventative Health
We believe human beings are meant to enjoy good health. Through the years, our family has personally benefited from simple dietary improvements, quality supplements, and natural remedies. This journey inspired us to create affordable, effective products for fellow South Africans.
We are committed to keeping our products fairly priced and avoid expensive marketing systems that increase costs for customers. Sue has always offered her time and advice freely. Several of her papers on fluoride, calcium, and hormone health have been well received at medical conferences, and many practitioners now recommend our mineral supplements.
Natural Support for Hormonal Balance
Sue conducted her own field research into natural ways to support hormonal health, particularly during times of stress, menstrual difficulties, and menopause. After testing a natural formula on herself for over a year with pleasing results, she made it available to others.
Many women have reported welcome relief from migraines, headaches, PMT, hot flushes, sore breasts, mood swings, and low mood. The product is completely natural, hormone-free, fast-acting, and gentle.
We have also developed natural intimate care products to support comfort and wellbeing, including Tea Tree and Rooibos vaginal washes to help maintain healthy pH balance, along with soothing and moisturising lubricants.
Natural Support for Blood Sugar Balance
We are currently researching and testing gentle, natural ways to help support healthy blood sugar levels. Sue previously explored this area with laboratory animals using nutritious muffins made with soy, oats, flax seeds, and fibre-rich ingredients.
Encouraging early results have come from diabetic volunteers working closely with their doctors. Some have been able to better manage their blood sugar levels. Adding a pleasant soya powder and ground flax seeds to daily meals is also helping many people maintain steadier energy.
For those with hypoglycaemia, these high-protein, slow-release options can help prevent sharp fluctuations in blood sugar.
