CAPE TO CAIRO ON BICYCLES : 3 BRAVE LADS, 8 MONTHS, 10 000 KM'S AND THE NATURE FRESH TEDDY

Hi guys (Nature Fresh)

I hope you're both doing very well. We certainly are and much thanks goes to Nature Fresh for this. Apologies for the delay in getting these to you - its been a bit of mission coordinating things with all three of us spread around the country.

I asked Imraan to do a write up for you guys (see forwarded mail below) - he really is your biggest fan.

Please find attached all Teddy pics - we tried to be creative and take them in cool places.

A small story from me: Thought not the most diligent when it came to taking pills, I was most grateful when Nature Fresh's herbal pills came to the rescue at a very critical time on our trip. About ten days before climbing Kilimanjaro I had the worst bout of diarrhea that I had on the trip (and perhaps my life to date). After a few days of no relief I overdosed on the herbal pills. I used the crushed powder that had resulted from pills breaking up along the way, mixed it in a litre of water, and sipped on this through out the day. A day after doing this I felt much better, I kept up the water herbal mixture drink for the next couple days and by the time we hit the mountain I was back to normal, and went on to successfully summit Africa's highest peak.

I'm trying to arrange with guys to come by for a visit and personally thank you guys.

Kind regards
Ria Moothilal

Cycling from Cape to Cairo to help deaf children

On the 22nd of March 2011, the Siyashova team set off on bicycles from Cape Town on a journey that will take them eight months, through ten countries and over 12 500 kilometres, leading to their destination of Cairo in Egypt. The primary aim of the trip is to benefit the Deaf community of South Africa and their goal is to generate awareness and raise funds for the Hear Us Foundation, a charity that helps bring the gift of sound to those who have not yet experienced it – through what is known as cochlear implants.

The team of 3 cyclists are made up of two qualified veterinarians,
Jiten Magan of Cape Town and Imraan Sayed from Verulam
while Ria Moothilal is a bio-resources engineer also from Verulam, KZN.

Their journey began in Cape Town on 22 March and they arrive in Port Elizabeth on Thursday 07 April. Hereafter they head for Lesotho, then to Durban and Swaziland.  From here they will cycle through Malawi, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, Ethiopia,  Sudan and then on to Cairo, Egypt their final destination. They will also as part of their journey be climbing Mount Kilamanjaro as part of their fund raising campaign.

The Hear Us Foundation (originally known as "Hear") was established in 2001 in association with the Tygerberg Hospital Cochlear Implant Unit. To date they have helped over 60 implantees and their fundraising assists with the costs of implants and the support of staff within the Unit. Hear Us also provides support and information to patients, parents and professionals.

Hear Us covers its own overheads, has no commission structure and relies solely on private fundraising efforts and donations. Their vision is to assist children and adults to obtain a cochlear implant in order to facilitate speech therapy and allow the deaf to integrate into the hearing world.

Hear Us is a registered and regulated  non-profit organisation and operates in close association with the Cochlear Implant Unit at TygerBerg Hospital and is affiliated to the University of Stellenbosch.

Jiten Magan , Imraan Sayed and Ria Moothilal are three young South Africans  who have put their professional careers on hold for a year to cycle from Cape Town to Cairo for Charity.
Their reason for undertaking this adventure is firstly, to experience Africa first hand , but more importantly to create a greater awareness about the plight of the Deaf Community and the huge challenges the Deaf face  on a daily basis.

This trip is self- funded ( sponsorships will be welcome ) and all donations raised through their effort will go directly to the Hear-Us Foundation which is linked to the Cochlear Implant Unit at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town.

The Cochlear Implant with all the associated costs will set any family back by approximately R270 000 , an amount which the average South African family cannot afford.

The SIYASHOVA Team aim to assist the Hear-Us Trust to get to their first Million Rand.  Hear-Us wish to raise several  Million over the years so that Cochlear Implant can be made available to the hearing  impaired on an ongoing basis.

The adventure :  3 Bicycles ;  10 Countries ;  12,500Km ;  lots of aching muscles.

The gallant Siyashova team left  Cape Town on 22 March 2011. They’ve gone past  Port Elizabeth , East London , Queenstown and are now in Matatiele. They head for Lesotho on Thursday via   Ramatseliso’s Gate and will re-emerge in KZN down the Sani Pass.( possibly a week later ).

The NATURE FRESH teddies go to Cairo!

Nature Fresh Health Products is sponsoring a few specific health products needed by the cyclists on their journey through Africa. Malaria control, parasites, infections, upset tummies and aching muscles will take their toll on any journey.
Cyclists are particularly at risk when dependent on food and water along the way. They are also equipped with a first aid and snake bite kit which hopefully will stay zipped in its pouch!

The three little teddy bears are going with them. From time to time they will pose in various places along the way, so watch out for them and see if you can guess where they are.

Progress: 7th April 2011
The Siyashova Team is making good progress on their way to Port Elizabeth.  They got to Stormsriver at 6.00pm ( Monday evening ).

If all goes well they will be in PE on Thursday.  Should the riding conditions be in their favour, they may even get to PE by Wed evening.

They are aware that  there will  be a  get together on Thursday evening at the Samaj Hall.

Progress: Durban. 13th May 2011
The cycling is going great. Lesotho was hard but the scenery and ruralness of the areas we were in was definitely worth it. Health-wise we're all in great shape. The bikes are going well as well and the support of everyone we've encountered has been terrific. At the moment we're on a break in Durban - Jiten's up in JHB sorting out our Ethiopian visas - we will hopefully get going again on Tuesday.
